Avoid Prom-night Tragedy

Don’t let an auto accident mar what should be a magical evening.

In the movies, prom night is both memorable and magical. It is a night that most teenagers will remember for the rest of their lives. But these days, it is also the night that most of the rules go out the window -- a night that can be dangerous. Teenagers may act as if they are immortal, but they are not. So, despite the euphoria that permeates the air on prom night, safe driving rules may be more important on that one night than they are at any other time of the year.

Here are some important reminders for teens about to embark on a prom-night excursion:

  • Cell phones should be reserved for emergency use only when you are on the road.
  • If you have to use your cell phone, pull safely over to the side of the road first.
  • Always wear your safety belt.
  • Limit your passengers. The risk of fatal crashes increases with every additional passenger, so prom night is not the night to overcrowd your car with several high-spirited friends.
  • Underage drinking and drug use is extremely dangerous and illegal. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can cost you your license, or possibly your life.
  • Stay focused while driving. Avoid distractions, such as loud music, eating or interacting too much with friends.
  • If your teens are traveling by limo, choose a reputable limousine company. Check if the limousine comes equipped with safety belts, and use them.
  • It’s a good night to make use of a parent-teen driving contract. Insurance company GEICO, which helped compile these potentially life-saving tips, offers a parent-teen driving contract template on its website.
  • As a parent, be thoroughly familiar with your teen’s plans for the evening. Make sure you know where all the pre- and post-prom events are being held and how your teen is getting there and back.

Prom night should be a memorable night for everyone involved. Please make the effort to ensure that it is not memorable for all the wrong reasons.
